Textiles

In Egypt, Miratex, jointly owned by Egyptian and Iranian interests, produces 10,000 tons of short and long staple yarn, employing 3,200 workers, exporting 60 per cent, worth USD 40 million, to more than 30 countries.

Dytex employs 2,300 workers manufacturing textiles for the USA, Italy, Germany and the UK.

Major brands, such as Van Heusen, Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, Marks and Spencer, the GAP, Liz Claiborne and Tommy Hilfiger use Egyptian-made textiles.

Success stories - Pharmaceuticals


Egyptian International Pharmaceutical Industries Co.

EIPICo. was established in 1982, in 10th of Ramadan City as a manufacturer and distributor of generics.

The company manufactures 185 products covering 25 therapeutic groups under licence from multinational pharmaceutical companies. It exports to 35 countries including Russia, Romania, Kuwait, and Pakistan.

GlaxoSmithKline Egypt S. A. E.

The company is a wholly-owned subsidiary of GlaxoSmithKline, and holds over 10 per cent of market share. Headquartered in Cairo, the company employs around 1,000 staff, with offices in Alexandria, Mansoura, and Souhag

The Co. raised its presence in Egypt by purchasing a 90 per cent stake in Amoun Pharmaceuticals for USD117 million.

The company manufactures products for peptic ulcers, bronchial asthma, skin diseases, migraine, nausea and antibiotics and vitamins.

Success Stories - Cement

CEMEX has been present in Egypt since early 1999, by acquiring 77 percent of Assuit Cement for EGP 1.084 billion (USD319 million), at EGP 44 per share. Another 13 percent was acquired by the Holding Company which owned Assiut Cement to CEMEX in June 2000 at the same price, a value of EGP 183 million (USD54 million).

While Assiut Cement had an original production capacity of 4 million metric tons/year, in 2001 CEMEX increased that figure to 4.5 million metric tons/year, and by mid 2002 Assiut Cement have had a total production capacity of 5 million metric ton/year.

The Italcementi Group has operated in Egypt since October 2001 with a global investment of approximately Euro 460 million, making the Italcementi Group one of the largest international investors in Egypt in a non-oil business.

The Suez Cement entry into the Italcementi Group’s industrial operations represents a key element in the company’s growth plans, which include new investments in order to raise efficiency. This will enable the group to strengthen its leadership in the Mediterranean basin.

Success Stories - Steel

EZDK

EZDK includes: 

1. Al Ezz Steel Rebars & Steel Mills Co. (ESR)  producing 1.4 million tons a year of rebars.

2. Alexandria National Iron & Steel Co. (ANSDK) producing 1.8 million tons a year of rebars and coil rods and 1 million ton a year of hot rolled coils with downstream facilities of pickling and oiling and a steel service center.

3. Al Ezz Flat Steel Co. (EFS) operates with a capacity of 1.2 million ton a year of hot rolled coils.

Alexandria National Iron & Steel Company is one of EZZ group companies and is considered the largest joint venture steel producer in the Egyptian market.

The company has an annual stand-alone designed capacity of 2.8 million tons, of which 1.8 million tons are for the production of rebars and 1 million tons for flat steel. Some 3500 workers are employed.

Automotive: Leoni Wire, Inc. is a worldwide supplier of wire, cable and wiring systems, employing 2,700 employees at factories in Egypt and is about to open a fourth with a fifth plant planned. Lenois' customers include well-known brands such as Land Rover, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Bentley, Caterpillar, Koito and TRW.

Leoni attributes its success to the abundance of a young, well-educated, hard-working labour force, competitive manufacturing costs, the active support of the Egyptian government, the Free Zone system and an exceptional commitment from employees.

GM Egypt was the first private sector automotive manufacturer in Egypt, established in 1982. The Mansour Group is the largest Egyptian shareholder in GME, with a 16 percent stake.
